Watering Your Dahlias

When making a plan for watering your dahlias, I recommend planting them in a location that they can receive a good amount of water and sun all summer long.

When Can I Water My Plants?

It is going to be hard to trust me, but you need too. You won't need to water your plants after planting them until you see the plants pushing up through the soil. There does need to be moisture in the soil for the tubers to thrive but take great care not to over water. Less is best until you see green popping up through the soil. I farm in Garden Zone 6B. It is a very dry and warm climate so I do like to run water once about 3 weeks after planting.

Once your plants have popped through the ground, they are going to love water. I recommend 1 time every day 7-10 days until your plants are about 6" tall and gradually go to 2 times a week as the weather warms up. In the heat of the summer and as your plants mature, you will need to be watering daily.

My tubers are grown on a corner of a field and are irrigated by gravity fed tubes. This is not going to be a common option for watering most gardeners. So do not think our watering methods have to be the same. They dont!

Dahlia watering systems should focus on long and deep watering sessions. This will help immensely. This process will promote root growth that leads to stronger and sturdier plants giving you beautiful blooms all summer long!
