Dahlia Planting Tips
If you are a beginner, or still a little stressed about how to get your dahlia tubers planted this year, this is for you. I compiled some of my tips that work best for me in garden zone 6b in Royal City, Washington.
Dahlias need well drained soil. Choose an area that water drains easily from, and receives at least 6 hours or more of sunlight per day.
Even if you are anxious to get them planted, wait until all signs of freezing temps have left your local forecast.
When planting, lay dahlias on their side 6-8" deep and space 18"-24" apart. Cover with soil. If you live in area with high winds I recommend planting deeper.
It can take from 2-4 weeks to see a sprout appear above the soil line.
Once your dahlias are planted, they do not need water until you see your dahlias break through the ground. If you are worried about moisture I like to pre-irrigate before planting and in my dry region I will sometimes irrigate once or twice in this time frame.
